I just moved to Chicago, here's what I've noticed

Making any transition in life can be a scary kind of change. In my life up to this point, I've had to make a lot of changes and adapt to many different situations but none are the same as moving to a city. For eight years I wanted to live in the city of Chicago and experience all that is to offer. Living 30 minutes away for the past five years has given me many opportunities to explore the city and get acclimated with the environment but nothing compares to when you actually reside downtown. You build up this narrative in your head of what you think it will be like but the truth is that you are the writer of your own story, any experiences you have are because you put yourself in those situations, good or bad. In only a span of 15 days I've engaged with so many different cultures and groups and no two are the same. You can see a kid walking home from school with his ink marker tagging the side of a dumpster off of Milwaukee Ave. or you can see a crackhead screaming on the blue line cause he lost his last cigarette, anything you could ever think of could happen on a daily basis but to everyone in this city, it just seems....normal. I’m sure as time passes I will learn not to bat an eye but what if you really paid attention? Is the reason that most creatives think the way they do because many grew up in major cities or is your creativity based on your own imagination rather than experience? Regardless, the more I walk around and look at how people go about their day-to-day lives the more I notice that people are very self-centered. Go back to that middle school way of thinking where time didn't seem to matter and your emotions were all based on experience rather than self-loathing. I don't know, I’ve been here for maybe two weeks so I clearly have no idea what I am talking about but I’m sure I will soon. The only way that you can learn about yourself and who you truly are as a person is to go out and find new experiences that draw in your interests. To put that shortly, just move to fucking Chicago.
