Summer always provides music that makes us feel like we are at the beach or driving with the windows down while the sun is setting. Dominic Fike’s second album “Sunburn” puts you in that exact calming summertime feel no matter where you are. The actor, producer, and songwriter blessed fans with the perfect album to live out their long summer days. Fike revealed a lot about the project and the meaning behind it in an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe. He touched on how a majority of these songs have been done for over three years and he was just waiting for confirmation to release them. Many fans were surprised at the suspected rumors of Fike signing with Colombia Records on a $4 million deal. Early in his career, we saw with his demo tapes that started him off to his now worldwide success. Fike is the type of artist that likes to release music when it is made and he says that in the Zane Lowe interview. “Every song I make I believe is my best song and I just want to release it right away.” With being under control of a label we will now see longer periods of time between releases for Fike. Regardless his sound has not changed and has only developed over time. You still get the timeless acoustic beats that puts you into a very mellow mindset as well as the meaningful lyrics that fully grab your attention. Songs such as “How Much is Weed?”, “Think Fast” featuring Weezer, and “7 Hours” have been on constant rotation for me the past week. When I listen to this project I get put directly in a calm mindset. I get memories of driving with friends while the wind blows through your hair. I get the feeling of smoking a joint on a summer night while you get bit by mosquitos. I love when music has the ability to put you into a different mindset and this project from Fike definitely does that for me. It is also good to know that after his success in the show “Euphoria,” he is still very focused on music and creating quality material that means something. This album really showcases Fike's true sound and his ability to have fun within music. In all of Fike’s songs regardless of this album, you are able to relate to it in your own way instead of being forced to feel a certain way about it. I hope that he continues to release projects on a consistent basis but this album definitely confirms his originality and ability as an artist. I would rate this album an 8.5 out of 10. His ability to grab your attention and make you feel something in the lyrics but also make music that makes want to get up and dance is a very difficult dynamic and I feel that he has found a way to master it. If he continues on this path then it seems like it is only up from here for Dominic Fike.
